Interview: All Things Hair with Sisi Nxumalo – Founder of Hair by Sisi

I don’t know about you but, if my hair is not popping, I’ll literally be insecure all day. Our hair is our crowns, and if our crows aren’t shiny, it makes it very difficult to fully be confident, and the good thing is that there are women out there who are passionate about fixing crowns and educating us on how we can maintain them!

I got an opportunity to interview the founder of Hair by Sisi to find out why she’s so passionate about making women look good, through her very own product line. Here’s everything you need to know.

  1. Tell me about yourself and where you grew up

I was born in Durban, KZN, and later moved to Cape Town where I did all my formal schooling. I then moved to Johannesburg as young adult to enter the workforce, and this is where I currently reside. I enjoy new challenges like learning a different language, trying new foods and meeting different people. It’s these experiences, and others, which has lead me to become a beauty entrepreneur.

  1. What inspired you to go into the hair business?

I wanted to buy great quality hair and could not find it, so I embarked on a personal mission to find great quality hair, which resulted in my business.

  1. Tell me about Hair by Sisi?

Hair by Sisi is a hair extensions company that specialises in great quality hair extensions, installations and hair care products. I named the company after myself, because all the hair we have on offer is hair that I have tried and tested myself. I believe that by using my own products, I am able to give clients real insight about what they can expect from our hair.

  1. What makes Hair by Sisi different?

We are client-centric, not only do we want to give our clients a great hair experience, but we are 100% confident in the quality of our hair and services we offer.  I always say that our hair does the talking, so if you are new to the hair game or an existing hair veteran, we encourage you to come to us to experience great hair every day.

  1. What challenges did you face in the business?

Turning a passion into business is not as easy as people say. In business one has to make tough calls with little emotion. Even though passion requires some emotion, it’s about knowing when and how much. Learning to balance the two was tricky in the beginning, but I  am confident that I have found my way.

  1. You have a YouTube channel. Why is it important for you to educate other ladies out there about hair?

My YouTube channel came about to fill the need of education, which I believe is key in any field. Naturally, I had to begin by educating myself, because I want “Beweavers” to know what they are receiving when they make a purchase. At Hair by Sisi we offer free consultations before purchasing our products so that we can help you make an informed decision. For those who purchase online and do not receive a consultation, I advise them to go and watch some of our YouTube videos, which will definitely, provide insight.

  1. What mantra do you live by, and why?

Be fearless in the pursuit of greatness. This is not to say that I am completely fearless, but when fear hinders my progress I take a break and take on the challenge without fear. Sometimes I win, other times I learn.

  1. What advice would you give to other women who want to start their own businesses?

The sooner you start, the sooner you learn!

  1. If you could ask for one thing in the world right now, what would that be, and why?

To empower other women. I know that I was born to help others, specifically women. I am where I am today because of the women who have helped me, believed in me and praised me, so I want to play my part in doing the same.

  1. How would you describe your business in one word?

Hairmpire. (Hair empire run by a strong, black business woman).

I suggest you go watch Sisi’s YouTube videos if you want to learn more about hair extensions and find out more about products that you can use to maintain your hairstyle.
